Transportation Engineering for Middle Level Math

Brief Description:
Students will practice rates, ratios, percentages and data collection using a simulated video of traffic passing the school.

Lesson Information
Learning Expectations:

Students will understand that collecting accurate data is important. They will also learn how to make a frequency chart, bar graph, histogram, and be able to interrupt the information. They will start to understand how math links to the real world.

Prerequisite lesson - Vocabulary and warm up activity (day 1)
Measurement Warm-Up (day 2)
Students direction sheet OR Direction sheet (alternative activity) for the activity (day 2) and group info.
Demo video
Activity counting kinds of vehicles (day 2)
Activity counting vehicles by color (day 2)
Using data make a frequency chart (day 3)
Using the data collect design and make a bar graph or line graph (day 4)
Display graphs, possible excel project
Interpret the graphs (day 5)

Data Set Used:

Data will be gathered by students in activity.

Materials Needed:

Yard sticks to measure to 40 foot testing area
The attached worksheet/warm up materials


Preparation Period:

This lesson was designed to be used over many days. Whatever time is necessary to gather yard sticks and run copies of materials. This lesson is divided into 4 parts; each matches with objectives taught from the four quarters of the school year. i.e. Lesson 1 – quarter 1, Lesson 2 – quarter 2

Implementation Period:

These lessons are designed to utilize and combine many of our districts/state objectives. By using our gathered data our work and lesson should be more relative to our students. Each lesson will take several days. These lessons could be used on consecutive days or as an extra culminating activity at the end of the chapter on data.

Students with different cultural backgrounds might be willing to discuss transportation in their native country. Such as riding a bicycle, wagon, boat or bus to school/work.
