RFIDs and the Future

Brief Description:
Students will learn what radio waves are. They will know the difference between UPC and RFIDs. They will be able to have a real life experience using RFIDs.

Lesson Information
Learning Expectations:

Students will learn what radio waves are. They will know the difference between UPC and RFIDs. They will be able to have a real life experience using RFIDs.

Plan Of Action:

1. Have the students do the work on the bell work PowerPoints before each day's lesson (Bellwork.ppt or Bell work1.ppt) for 5 minutes. (Journal entries can be graded using the RubricforJournalEntries.doc)
2. Have students fill out How radio works worksheet (Howraidoworks.doc and HowradioworksKey.doc).
3. Show RFID PowerPoint (RFID.ppt) and explain RFIDs
4. Have students research and write a paper on UPC vs. RFIDs, use UPC vs RFID PowerPoint to introduce assignment (UPCVSRFID.ppt) This assignment should be given and turned in a week later. (Use the RubricforUPCVSRFID.doc to grade the paper.)
5. Have students read RFID current events paper (rfidcurrentevents.pdf)
6. Then, have students fill out Chips High-tech aids or tracking devices worksheet (ChipsHigh-techaidsortrackingdevices.doc and RubricforChipHigh-techaids.doc)

Additional or Optional Lessons/Activities: (outlined in SuggestedUse.doc) There are a couple of different lessons that you can pull from the lesson plan.
1. Follow the above lesson plan.
2. If you wanted to just teach about radio waves, you could have the students fill out How radios work worksheet (Howraidoworks.doc and HowradioworksKey.doc ).
3. You could just have the student write a report on RFID and have the students use a portable reader if you can get access to it.
4. If you needed some write prompts you could have them read RFID current events (rfidcurrentevents.pdf) and have them fill out Chips High-tech aids or tracking devices worksheet (ChipsHigh-techaidsortrackingdevices.doc and RubricforChipHigh-techaids.doc).
5. If you have access to a barcode reader, have student fill out Using Portable reader spreadsheet (UsingPortablereader.xls). This sheet is set up for finding books in a library. The students will learn about using the technology in real life situations.
6. If you don’t have a portable reader and tags available to you. Here are some other options for you
a. Take a field trip to a business that uses RFID like Wal-Mart
b. Have a speaker come in to talk about how they use RFID in their business..

Data Set Used:

Students will use various resources provided to collect data during their research of the topic.

Preparation Period:

1. Make sure you can get into www.howstuffworks.com
2. Time for getting papers printed out
3. If available, 1-2 hours getting the portable reader and tags set up.
4. Optional: You can order a video from Avery Dennison by click on the link, then click on the CD RFID 101. It will take a couple of weeks to get.
5. Optional: If you don’t have a portable reader and tags available to you. Here are some other options for you that you will have to make additional time for to set up.
a. Take a field trip to a business that uses RFID like Wal-Mart
b. Have a speaker come in to talk about how they use RFID in their business.

4. Show RFID PowerPoint (RFID.ppt) and explain RFIDs
5. Have students research and write a paper on UPC vs. RFIDs, use UPC vs RFID PowerPoint to introduce assignment (UPCVSRFID.ppt) This assignment should be given and turned in a week later. (Use the RubricforUPCVSRFID.doc to grade the paper.)

Day Three (All individual work)
6. Have students read RFID current events paper (rfidcurrentevents.pdf)
7. Then, have students fill out Chips High-tech aids or tracking devices worksheet (ChipsHigh-techaidsortrackingdevices.doc and RubricforChipHigh-techaids.doc)

Science, Math, Engineering and / or Technology Implications:

Students will use portable RFID readers to simulate real life experiences.
