Lesson Overview
Lesson Title:
Zip Line

Teachers:
Mr. David Shabram (Primary)

Brief Description:
In this lesson, students use the Engineering Design Process to design and construct a ping-pong ball carrier to be used on a zip line.

Topics Introduced:
Engineering Design Process

Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics Curriculum Framework Components Addressed:
Transportation Operations
Facility and Mobile Equipment Maintenance
Transportation Systems/ Infrastructure Planning, Management and Regulation
Suggested Grade Levels:
7th Grade
8th Grade

Subjects:
Engineering
Standards Taught:
8.3.2 Science 2003
8.6.1 Science 2003
8.6.2 Science 2003
8.2.5 Math 2006
8.5.1 Math 2006

Lesson Information
Learning Expectations:

Following the Engineering Design Process, students will design and construct a zip line carrier. The carrier should travel the zip line as quickly as possible by applying the concepts of balance and friction.

Plan Of Action:

Day 1: Introduce the Engineering Design Process - watch example videos and complete the graphic organizer

Day 2: Introduce the concept of a zip line (show videos of zip lines in action) and get students started on the Zip Line Design Brief

Days 3-5: Students complete the Zip Line Design Brief

Day 6: Students complete the Zip Line Self Assessment

Days 7-8: Zip Line races

Data Set Used:

Data could be written in a graphic organizer.

Materials Needed:

See the Tools, Materials, Equipment list in the design brief that is attached. Also, see the picture of the materials.

Preparation Period:

Several days to plan and gather materials.

Implementation Period:

Each student has the opportunity to test their carrier on the zip line as many times as possible. When we have the "race" to determine the fastest carrier in the class, it takes about 1 1/2 class periods (44 minutes/class period) to get through all runs.

Science, Math, Engineering and / or Technology Implications:

Science: Balance, Friction, Data Collection
Math: Calculating Mean
Engineering: Design, Tool & Material usage
